Angelides Goes From Bad to Worse

As if it matters to anyone, in a fundraising (what else would you expect from Phil?) email to his mailing list today, Angelides urged "urgent" action to defeat a budget proposal that he says "will take California in the wrong direction." Angelides attacks Speaker Nunez -- the co-chair of his campaign who raised more funds for him than any other elected official in the state. But hey, what are friends for?

Angelides -- who usually does his homework -- gets it all wrong in his email. Angelides attacks the tax credits for California's film industry, despite the fact that he endorsed them in his campaign for Governor. Here's the AP report: "Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides said Thursday he would consider using tax breaks to stop Hollywood jobs from fleeing California, even at a time when he has warned of looming budget problems and what he calls unjustified corporate tax loopholes. Angelides, the state treasurer, also accused Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of doing 'zero, zip' to slow the exodus of entertainment jobs to other states and around the globe. The Republican governor, a former film star, 'talks, he's a showman,' Angelides said in an interview with The Associated Press. 'This is an area where you would think that this governor, in his two and a half years, would have sat down with leaders of the industry, with legislative leaders ... to find a way to continue to make us competitive in the global economy with respect to entertainment,'  Angelides said. If elected, Angelides said he would be 'very open to working with the industry on tax incentives, regulatory incentives.'

Angelides also misstates the cuts to public schools and community colleges in urging a no vote on the budget. Perhaps he should talk to the Education Coalition, which held a press conference today urging the Senate to pass the budget.

With all his concerns, maybe Angelides ought to think about running for governor. Oh wait. He tried that.
