Dramarama at US Conference of Mayors

This morning, the US Conference of Mayors, who are meeting in Los Angeles, passed a resolution calling for the expedited withdrawal of troops from Iraq.  A source on the scene says that things got rather heated.  Apparently, Fresno Mayor and former "In the Heat of the Night" actor, Alan Autry (R) resigned from the Conference and walked out of the meeting.

This isn't the first time that Autry has split with a non-partisan municipal organization over political differences. In late-2005, right before the special statewide election on Governor Schwarzenegger's various initiatives, Autry resigned from the board of the League of California Cities.  Autry had asked the board to endorse Proposition 76. The board refused, prompting Autry's exit.  Despite having left the board, Autry later urged the entire membership of the League to overturn the boards' neutral position and endorse the proposition. Autry's motion, after a personal lobbying appearance by Governor Schwarzenegger, narrowly passed 135-124.

Autry is termed out of office in 18 months.  So, perhaps, this recent grandstanding might be a ploy to set himself up to run for another office.
