ALP is Alive!

by Brian Leubitz [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

The American Leadership Project, a California based 527 lead by a pair of folks the CA-blogosphere knows something about, Roger Salazar and Jason Kinney, is alive again.  It had been quiet after posting after some half-hearted attempts at media buys in Ohio and Indiana.

Well, they birthed 2 new ads, one for Montana and one for Puerto Rico. Not sure on the ad buy for these, but for context, in Ohio they had some ads up on YouTube for weeks and only got them on the air for the last couple days. (h/t TPM)

Hey folks. I am sure you have noticed the lack of posting lately. As the title indicates this will be the last post. The Working Californians blog is going dormant for the time being.

You can continue to find my postings over at Calitics and any number of other outlets.

Thank you for being such loyal readers. See you around the blogosphere.

Doolittle to Retire? What It Means for Democrats

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

The Republican blogosphere is rife with rumors that Congressman John Doolittle is going to throw in the towel and not run for re-election. Instead, he'll throw his support to former State Senator Rico Oller, who has been lying in wait for higher office since his loss to Congressman Dan Lungren in the neighboring Congressional district.

Oller hails from the extreme right wing of the Republican party (as in being to the right of Dan Lungren). In the Legislature, he was known as a publicity hound and had a disastrous record on environmental and social issues but a favorite among hard-line conservatives

(In other words, he's John Doolittle with a smile.)

If the rumor mill is true, Oller may have to duke it out with Assemblyman Ted Gaines, who also is cut from the same cloth (as well as two other primary challengers who may very well fold their tents if Doolittle quits). The two have rival political organizations, however. Gaines is more established in the district and has better name ID because he holds office and has been laying the groundwork for a primary challenge against Doolittle, which obviously didn't endear him to Doolittle's political allies.

At a Loss

by Julia Rosen [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

Oh Jerry McNerney.  What is to be done with you?  Frankly, I am saddened about this whole thing.  It has been clear that all of our work to create communications channels about your Iraq positioning was for naught.  Many a blog post has been written, warning you to take a strong stance on withdrawing from Iraq or face the loss of the blogosphere's support.  In fact, you heeded our calls to do exactly that.  You were praised here and across the blogosphere.  Finally, it appeared that you were living up to your campaign promises.

But only hours later came this article in the WaPo.  There are so many things wrong with this story and your role in its creation that it is hard to know where to start.  The entire premise of the article is that the Democrats are in disarray.  After all of the work done this summer to divide up the Republicans, we are now undoing all of our gains through these articles.  Repeat with me, "the bloodiest summer yet".  Just check out this lede:

Just How Much Do Local Blogs Matter?

by Andrew Davey (atdleft) [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

After seeing Gila's latest story on The Liberal OC, I've been thinking. I know, I know. That's a REALLY scary thought. But trust me, it's not scary.

All too often when we think of the netroots, we think of those big, glitzy, glamorous national blogs with all those hundreds of thousands of User IDs. We think of that huge convention in Chicago that just ended. We think big, and we think national. But when you really look at the big picture, the national scene is only a small part of it.

The SF Chronicle just caught onto this, and I'm glad to see them noticing. There's a giant segment of the netroots that hasn't been noticed much, but is nonetheless making a huge difference throughout California, and throughout the nation. Follow me after the flip for more...
