A Message from Debbie Cook at Netroots Nation

by Penny Denenberg [courtesy of Party Line]

Last month Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (CA-46) made news of the silly sort when he stood on the floor of the House of Representatives and gave a speech ascribing global climate change to ”dinosaur flatulence.”

In comments broadcast on C-SPAN television last week, Rohrabacher suggested that "dinosaur flatulence" may have been responsible for past swings in global temperatures, and that the enormous growth in atmospheric carbon dioxide in the past century -- and increased global temperatures -- are not man-caused.

Rohrabacher's claim puts him at odds with many in his own party, including President George W. Bush, whose White House acknowledged man-made global warming this year.

Of course, after his comments turned him into a media laughingstock, Rohrabacher tried to walk back from his statement claiming it was all a big joke.  But it’s hard to figure out what’s more offensive, treating the challenges presented by global climate change as a joke or being massively ill-informed about the major perils that face our planet in the coming years.

Newseum Opens in DC April 11-What's the Most Significant News Event of Your Lifetime?

by Annilow [courtesy of Blog for America]

C-SPAN's Washington Journal did a segment on the new Newseum in Washington this morning. They have moved their headquarters to what looks like palatial digs right in the heart of Washington. Admission for adults is $20. They have newspapers from most American cities outside with the front page. They have an exhibit dedicated to the Berlin Wall with more 'wall' than exists anywhere today outside of Berlin. I cried when they showed the exhibit dedicated to journalists and photojournalists who died or were injured in the line of duty. They have Dan Pearl's computer and his last US Passport. They have a pillowcase on which a dying journalist scribbled "Tell my family I love them," just before he died.

The Newseum is located at Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixth Street, N.W., Washington, DC (from their website) and the map shows it just a few blocks from the Capitol building.

I recall from the broadcast the building cost something like 400 million dollars and I'm not clear on where they got the money, but they did say from multiple sources. I think it will be a great place for us to put on our agendas when we visit DC for our DemFest in August.

Howard Dean at Georgetown University

by DFA Staff [courtesy of Blog for America]

This past Wednesday, DNC Chairman Gov. Howard Dean spoke at Georgetown University's Black History Month Student Forum.  He covered a wide range of topics from John McCain's hypocrisy to the inclusiveness of the Democratic Party to the new technologies the Democratic Party will be using to turn out the vote.  It is a great speech and afterward he takes questions from a panel of student leaders.  Here is a link to a RealPlayer file from C-SPAN of the event.

Hat-tip to audrey.nc in the comments for letting us know that Gov. Dean was on C-SPAN.

Four New California Polls -- Two for Clinton, Two for Obama

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

The pollsters are just as split as the electorate in the run-up to the hotly contested February 5 California primary. Four new polls are out.

In the latest Field Poll, Senator Hillary Clinton is up by a narrow 36-34 margin, with 18 percent undecided. She was up 12 points on January 22. But in the latest McClatchy/MSNBC poll, Clinton has more breathing room, holding on to a 45-36 lead.

Meanwhile, the latest Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby has Senator Barack Obama up by 4 points, at 45-41. Rasmussen has the race at a near tie, with Obama holding a narrow 45-44 lead over Clinton.

Don't Drop Incentives for Renewable Energy from Conference Energy Bill

The Honorable Tim Ryan
The Honorable Debbie Wasserman Schultz
The Honorable Christopher Murphy
United States House of Representatives

Regards: Energy Bill Surrender

Dear Representatives Ryan, Wasserman Schultz, and Murphy:

It was a great pleasure to view the exchanges among the three of you on the House floor
during C-SPAN coverage one evening last June.  A discerning listener might detect partisanship and scripting in your remarks.  That's fine with me.  Having tuned in to the opposing partisans' radio jockeys during their 24-hour domination of talk radio over the public's airwaves, I found myself wishing that same audience and medium would devote equal time to the intellectually stimulating, well reasoned, arguments that each of you made in turn.

The central theme that I followed in your arguments was the case that what Congress does matters.
It makes a difference in:
how well the majority of our citizens can make a living,
whether, or not, we are able to engage in "the pursuit of happiness" that is our birthright,
and whether, or not, our children and grandchildren will live better or worse than those of us responsible for today's decisions.
