What will you do to stop the Republican theft of the White House?

by Julia Rosen [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

Courage Campaign has been working hard to beat back the dirty trick initiative.  We have been collecting thousands of pledges to defeat it and sent 2,148 copies of the initiative directly to Arnold's office.  We have a ton of other great ideas up our sleeves, but we need your support to put it into action.

Below is the email we just sent out to Courage Campaign members, including a video ask from Rick Jacobs.

Notable elected officials, unions, and civil rights and faith-based organizations have joined forces in opposition to a proposed California ballot initiative that would bankrupt California by pumping billions of dollars into prisons and failed "anti-gang" laws and "tough on crime" policies of the past. The Coalition to Defeat George Runner's Initiative held a press conference May 7, 2008, announcing the formation of the new coalition, which includes the California Federation of Teachers, California Church IMPACT, the California NAACP, and the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. The press conference coincided with other coordinated events taking place throughout the state (Sacramento, Los Angeles, Fresno) in a coordinated Coalition Day of Action.

Dirty Tricksters Caught on Video: CBS Evening News Edition

by Erik Love [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

Just before Thanksgiving, I posted my video showing the illegal tactics that the Republicans are willing to use in order to get signatures on their so-called "Electoral College Reform Initiative" - a ballot proposal that in reality is yet another election-stealing Republican dirty trick.  And now, my video has just been featured nationally on the CBS Evening News.

In just a matter of days, the 2008 presidential election may actually be decided. In California. By progressives like you.

Because of your grassroots and netroots activism, the GOP's California ballot initiative campaign to steal the White House -- what the New York Times called an "elaborate dirty trick" designed by a "shadowy group" to "do serious damage to our democracy" -- is under significant pressure.

GOP California Electoral Heist Prospects Dim

by Michael Kuykendall [courtesy of Blog for America]

The Republican attempt to hijack California's 2008 electoral votes is foundering; will low poll numbers and a lack of signatures stop this blatant attempt at electioneering?

The California ballot initiative I first posted about here, the one initially funded by Giuliani supporter and hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer, is back in the news- apparently supporters are still rushing to get the 700,000 signatures needed to get this blatant GOP attempt to hijack the presidential vote on the ballot. From the LA Times;

Backers of a California initiative that could significantly aid the next Republican presidential nominee said today they're still collecting signatures to qualify it for the state's ballot in June, terming as premature reports that they have wrapped up the process.

"The goal is to be completed by Dec. 1," Mike Arno, the contractor heading the signature-gathering effort, told The Times' Dan Morain.

He added that "people are still out working" and circulating petitions.

$1.2 million for Dirty Tricks

by Julia Rosen [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

They are getting closer to having enough money to pay for all of the signature gatherers.  The $600k they announced earlier would not get it done.  They have raised a total of $1.2 million.  They will need at least $2 million to pay for the signatures to be collected.  Politico is the only one with the story thus far, so regretfully I link:

Backers of a California ballot initiative that would drastically increase Republican chances of retaining the White House in 2008 have raised $1.2 million, including $316,000 in eight days this month - and supporters say they're on pace to qualify for the vote in June.

The group, California Counts - Make Your Vote Count!, reported Tuesday it had raked in $855,000, mostly from a handful of huge contributions, according to a filing with the California Secretary of State's office.

That doesn't include $350,000 in contributions which are either below the reporting threshold of $5,000 or which arrived in the past week, campaign manager Dave Gilliard said.

Contributions above $5k have to be reported to the Secretary of State's office within 10 days.

They are expected to turn in the signatures by the 29th.  Then the SoS will do a random test of the signatures to estimate how many are valid.  If they pass that test then it goes to the ballot.  If it fails, then they will do a manual count.

Michael Blood and AP Coverage of Dirty Tricks Initiative

by Bob Brigham [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

Two and a half weeks ago, Jamison Foser wrote:

There are, in short, very few things more significant to the outcome of next year's presidential election than this California ballot initiative. It is, then, vitally important that the media thoroughly, accurately, and fairly cover this fight -- and not just the California media -- the national media as well. The initiative may appear only on the California ballot, but it will impact the entire nation, and the campaigns for and against it will no doubt be waged with the help of national donors, activists, and operatives.

The initiative is beginning to draw significant media attention, but much of that coverage has been lacking.

Michael R. Blood of the Associated Press seemed to miss the memo...

Attorney Seeks Probe of California Electoral Vote Plan

[courtesy of California Progress Report]

Terryfaceplace.jpg By Terry Williams

Attorney Bernie Fadem has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request seeking information about contacts between the White House, the RNC, and those behind the California Dirty Tricks Initiative.

According to the Contra Costa Times:

"A Lafayette attorney who specializes in election law is seeking a Congressional investigation into whether the White House was involved in pushing a California ballot initiative to change the way the state allocates its electoral votes.

"Barry Fadem, who is working for the group opposed to the initiative, also made a Freedom of Information Act request with the White House on Friday to reveal all contacts between Bush Administration officials, the Republican National Committee and other political operatives discussing potential changes to the state's electoral college laws."
