California's delegation to the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August is leading the way in making the gathering the greenest in the party's history.California Democratic Party Chairman Sen. Art Torres (Ret.) today announced the delegation, comprised of delegates and alternates, standing committee members, staff, and all other official convention goers affiliated with the party (for a total of 844 Californians), will offset its carbon footprint at the convention thanks to the purchase of carbon credits by PG&E."This year's Democratic nominee will be committed to reducing global warming, so it's only natural that California's delegation to the convention do its part and lead the way," said Torres. "This will be the 'greenest' convention in history thanks in large part to our efforts and those of the Democratic National Convention to use carbon offsets, recyclable materials, and to reduce our impact on the environment.""California is America's trend-setter, so I'm very pleased our delegation is setting the pace by showing the rest of the nation that we recognize global warming is the greatest threat facing the environment," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Chair of the California Delegation. "The simple fact is that global warming can't be stopped, but it can be slowed, and every little bit helps."There's more...

Hillary Clinton's decision to continue fighting for the nomination is placing California delegates in a sticky position."On one hand, Emerson was readying Clinton's California delegation tofight – if needed – all the way to the Democratic National Convention. On the other, he was eagerly reaching out to supporters of IllinoisSen. Barack Obama, hoping to unite the party."

The LA Times reports that 84,000 low-income elderly and disabled people face losing state assistance under Governor Schwarzenegger's revised budget.

The debate over dueling propositions 98 and 99is centering on the funding for each, according to the Sacramento Bee."Prop. 98 was written by landlords, is paid for by landlords, for thesole financial benefit of landlords," said Janis Hirohama, president ofthe League of Women Voters of California.

Calitics is going to Denver

I'm super-duper proud to announce that Calitics will be the official state blog for California at the DNC Convention in Denver this August!  We'll be covering all of the action from the floor of the convention, actually seated within the California delegation. We actually only have one press pass to share amongst the Calitics Crew that will be attending, but we'll work to maximize the efficacy of said press pass. (Also, shout out to DNC folks. California has 10% of the delegates, why only slightly greater than 1% of the state blogger passes?)

We'll be giving out some more details as we get closer to the convention (the end of August).  These things are always more about the presentation than any actual stuff that happens there. While this year isn't all that likely to be different, there does exist a remote possibility of some drama.  Either way, it should be an interesting experience for those of us that will be attending.

Pretty fancy video, huh? Howard Dean went all out for our (state or territory).
