Central Valley Convention a Big Success
by Candi Easter, CDP Region Director, Region 8
The Democratic Central Committees of Fresno, Kern, Kings and Tulare County hosted the first Central Valley Democratic Convention this past Saturday to re-energize and network with fellow Democrats.
Attendees listened to panel discussions on the State of the Valley, State of the State, and State of the Nation. Participants included retired military, various experts on popular issues, grassroots activists, elected politicians, CDC officers and party leaders.
More than 400 Central Valley Democrats attended and enjoyed the booths and entertainment and a "Wall of Honor" depicting the soldiers killed in action in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.
California Democratic Party Chairman Art Torres called for all to help stop the Electoral College “reform initiative" that the Giuliani campaign is moving toward the June ballot. Many representatives from presidential candidates were available to gather volunteers for the February 2008 primary.
One of the highlights of the program was a presentation by the "Raging Grannies," a local singing group made up of “age-challenged” ladies who use satire and music to make their political point.

The California Democratic Council: "Winning Elections One Club at a Time"
[courtesy of California Progress Report]

By Sharon Kyle and Dick Price
The California Democratic Council (often called “the CDC”) is the statewide association of Democratic Clubs and County Committees. Founded in 1952 by a group of legendary Democrats, including Alan Cranston, at its height, the CDC coordinated hundreds of Democratic clubs in every corner of the state, boasting more than 70,000 members. For many years, the CDC played a greater role in the success of the Democratic Party in California than the party itself.
In the 55 years since its inception, the CDC has continued to be the progressive arm of the California Democratic Party. But in recent years, it has also focused on providing training and resources to Dem Clubs. This year, at its 55th Annual Convention that just concluded at the LAX Sheraton, the CDC demonstrated that it might be re-emerging as the “go to” organization for training, connecting, and coalition building.
