A Veteran Remembers

Giving thanks to those who served

Sunday, November 11, 2007 marks America’s annual recognition of our veterans. Why November 11?  Because that date is symbolic of the end of World War I -- on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Of the 24 million current American veterans, about 3.2 million served in the military during World War II.  Sadly, we lose more than 1,000 of these WWII veterans each day as they move on to their next assignment in the great sky.

Who are veterans?

They are Americans -- although some went into the military not as a U.S. citizen; many were draftees, and some had spent 30 years or more in the military, although during the last 35 years, all joined the military to serve a two to four year stint.

Some of these veterans were Officers, but most were not; they served in the air, on the seas or on the ground, and had assignments that ranged from mess hall duty to driving a truck or tank to “living” in a foxhole.

These veterans had no routine hours – the term “24/7 probably came from the military.

Until the early 1990s, the only real communication with one’s family was good old-fashioned mail (i.e. snail mail) and in a war zone, it’s free for the troops to send.

DEMOCRATS SEEK METHOD IN THIS MADNESS

towashington 089.gif

By Bill Cavala
A veteran of over 30 years in Sacramento

So let me get this straight. The GOP Chair, Ron Nehring, has hired an “alien” to be the party’s chief campaign operative earlier this year.

Now this “alien’s” legal status has been questioned by the Bush Administration’s Department of Home Security. Evidently they busted this operative on an immigration issue. Held him in jail for 30 days.

The guy running the operation for the California Republican Party is suing the Bush Administration’s Department of Home Security for millions of dollars.

Not very patriotic. But then, he is an Aussie.

But give him credit. He did try and become a citizen. Why he married not one, but two American women who tried to legalize his status.

Former GOP spokesperson, Karen Hanretty was critical of the hire – not because of his immigration status, but on the issue of his competency (given his newness to the arena) and the fact that there are out-of-work American GOP operatives.

Tailpipe standards already in place in California and 11 other states would reduce global warming emissions by nearly 400 million metric tons by 2020 – a reduction level equivalent to taking 74 million of today’s cars off the road for an entire year, according to a new report, "The Clean Cars Program: How States are Driving Cuts in Global Warming Pollution". The report was released yesterday by Environment California, a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. . It comes as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is holding a public hearing today on whether to give states the green light to reduce global warming pollution from cars and SUVs.
