Will the grassroots shift consciousness and create the tippiing point to solve the climate crisis?

by Linda*in*SFNM [courtesy of Blog for America]

What will it take to look in to the future and act before it's too late?

Bono writes:

“Al Gore is the kind of leader these times require. Not as President — God and the Electoral College have given him a different job. As it happens, Al is at work repositioning his country from the inside out as a leader in clean energy; and along the way restoring faith in the U.S. as a moral powerhouse that can lead a great, global spiritual revival as the temperature rises.”

“For Al, 2008 is a rendezvous with destiny and an appointment with the enemy. The foe he sees is our own indifference to the future and a lack of faith in our ability to do anything about it. He stresses that through crisis we can find opportunity. His language is pretty Biblical, but, then, doesn't the Bible say something about floods? He is like an Old Testament prophet amped up with PowerPoint and an army of the world's scientists at his disposal. The right response to the global-warming crisis, he explains, will be a mosaic of solutions that will kick off a whole new economic boom, one that is low-carbon and high-productivity, with truly sustainable development, and an atlas for planet management — using not New Age technology but old age wisdom generating sustainable solutions.”

Congratulations Al Gore on your Nobel Peace Prize

Today Mr. Gore is being honored in Oslo, Norway, along with the IPCC (the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) on their decades of work to alert the world and change course on man made Climate Change caused by Global Warming.

Oslo, Al Gore: "I have one reason for being optimistic, and that is that I see throughout my own country, the United States of America, and throughout the world the rising of the world's first people-power movement on a global basis," he said.

Mr. Gore has been studying the environment since his college days at Harvard.

After serving in Vietnam, even though he was opposed to the War,

he reported for his local paper for 5 years before entering politics

and holding his first position in the US House for Tennessee.

always committed, here in the House he championed food labeling

Years of service to the people,

FOX Attacks! The Environment

by Sheri Divers [courtesy of Blog for America]

It's FOX Attacks time... again.

In March we all took on Fox and we beat them. Bad. The Nevada Fox-sponsored presidential debates were canceled when our videos showing Fox's distortions were spread far and wide. Local bloggers worked like crazy, activists around the country wrote and called, and MoveOn used their strategic strength and smarts to bring it all home.

Now Fox is at it again. The only surprise this time is the amount of time and energy they are putting into denying that the sun sets in the west. Okay, well not exactly, but pretty close. They are fighting the scientific truth of the climate crisis and are claiming it just isn't so! I'm not kidding. Take a look at the video evidence, you won't believe what you see. (Well, maybe you will)

MoveOn's Climate Virtual Townhall

by Julia Rosen [courtesy of Working Californians blogs]

Over the weekend, MoveOn hosted one of a series of virtual townhalls, where the presidential candidates answer questions of concern to MoveOn members. This one was on the climate and timed to coincide with Live Earth.

All of the Democratic contenders participated and were asked three questions:

  1. How does your plan on climate crisis differ from other candidates?
  2. Do you support the use of an subsidies for liquid coal?
  3. How will Americans, not just corporations, benefit from new energy economy?

The responses were video taped and put up on YouTube. Nobody really made any real news in their comments, but it is an easy way to compare the candidates in a non-traditional format. The candidates often use the initial questions to address their broader environmental and energy policies.

Here is the highlights video.

Perhaps the most interesting tidbit was that while Senators Edwards and Obama stated their support for a carbon emissions market (cap-and-trade variation), Clinton said that it would be one of several things she would consider.

Rep. Kucinich reaches out to you

by Sheri Divers [courtesy of Blog for America]

Democracy for America members have been keeping the pressure up on the candidates for President. Starting with a primary petition in January demanding a strong Iraq plan and then again in April calling for action on the climate crisis, many of the democratic candidates have been responding directly to you.

Today, I'm excited to bring you two great responses from Representative Dennis Kucinich:
http://www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/kucinich

First, Representative Kucinich details his comprehensive plan to fight climate change. Kucinich wants "to make everything in this country about energy conservation" including international policy and trade agreements.

In the second video, Congressman Kucinich hits hard on Iraq: "I voted 100% of the time against funding this war, because I understood that – you fund this war – you reauthorize it all over again."
