In Remembrance: Medgar Evers

[courtesy of Blog for America]

45 years ago today, civil rights activist and pioneer Medgar Evers was shot and killed.  From South Mississippi's Sun Herald:

Evers was shot shortly after midnight on June 12 as he got out of his car and dragged himself to the back door of his home, where he died in front of his wife and three children.

A short video on Medgar Evers' work and life:

This video examines Evers' drive to get blacks to vote, the hardships they encountered at the registration office, his murder in his driveway, how the police tried to provoke violence at his funeral, and how all-white juries refused to convict his killer in the 1960's.

A Change in Direction for GM

The Washington Post reports on the General Motors plant closings:

General Motors will close four of its truck and SUV plants in coming months, expand production of its more fuel efficient cars and move forward with development of an electric vehicle, as the auto giant adapts to skyrocketing energy costs and changing consumer preferences.

Free Speech in Russia

[courtesy of Blog for America]

The New York Times reports on Vladimir Putin's efforts to silence his critics and keep them off the airwaves:

On a talk show last fall, a prominent political analyst named Mikhail G. Delyagin had some tart words about Vladimir V. Putin. When the program was later televised, Mr. Delyagin was not.

Not only were his remarks cut — he was also digitally erased from the show, like a disgraced comrade airbrushed from an old Soviet photo. (The technicians may have worked a bit hastily, leaving his disembodied legs in one shot.)

Mr. Delyagin, it turned out, has for some time resided on the so-called stop list, a roster of political opponents and other critics of the government who have been barred from TV news and political talk shows by the Kremlin.

The stop list is, as Mr. Delyagin put it, “an excellent way to stifle dissent.”
