Primary Primer: What to Look For Tonight

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

Today's primary is one of those elections where you never knowwhat might happen but nobody can predict who's going to show up.There's some buzz on the national scene about Sen. Hillary Clintonending her campaign (though as I write this that's beingdisputed) and Sen. Obama winning enough delegates to put it away, butthere's plenty of news to be made on California issues as well.(Shameless self-promotion plug: I'll be on KCRA-3 tonight in Sacramentoanalyzing trends.)

Here's what the talking heads will be chatting about tonight....

Calitics is going to Denver

by Brian Leubitz [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

I'm super-duper proud to announce that Calitics will be the official state blog for California at the DNC Convention in Denver this August!  We'll be covering all of the action from the floor of the convention, actually seated within the California delegation. We actually only have one press pass to share amongst the Calitics Crew that will be attending, but we'll work to maximize the efficacy of said press pass. (Also, shout out to DNC folks. California has 10% of the delegates, why only slightly greater than 1% of the state blogger passes?)

We'll be giving out some more details as we get closer to the convention (the end of August).  These things are always more about the presentation than any actual stuff that happens there. While this year isn't all that likely to be different, there does exist a remote possibility of some drama.  Either way, it should be an interesting experience for those of us that will be attending.

Pretty fancy video, huh? Howard Dean went all out for our (state or territory).

Obama Campaign Reinstates Delegate Slates

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

Reversing one of the most boneheaded moves of the campaign season, the Obama campaign is reinstating the delegates it struck from its campaign slates. The Associated Press has the story.

The move angered many of the grassroots supporters of Obama. And it's unclear how it will impact the mini-campaigns of the delegates since many suspended their outreach once they learned they'd be struck by the campaign. (I know of at least two Obama supporters who said they'd attend a Clinton caucus instead).

Give the Obama campaign credit for realizing they screwed up.

Record Interest in Delegate Races

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

With the deadline for filing for delegate slots ending last night, there's been a record number of California Democrats signing up to run for the coveted slots.

More than 2,500 applications were received by the California Democratic Party for 241 slots. In 2004, about 1,200 competed.

Here's a story I'm featured in on Sacramento's News10. In my Sacramento area Congressional district, 39 Democrats filed for the Obama delegates and 21 filed for Hillary.

BREAKING DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION: 289-742 Against Endorsing Migden

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

298-742 is the count AGAINST endorsing Senator Carole Migden. Not even close.

591-388 is the count FOR endorsing Assemblymember Mark Leno. That's 60.3%. He needed 75% to get the official endorsement, but he received a comfortable majority of delegates nevertheless.

Democratic Convention bound!

by William Monroe [courtesy of Blog for America]

There are a LOT of DFA Delegates and Alternates headed to Denver this August. Lets get together as a DFA caucus of some kind...or at least have a party some morning... to celebrate our history and our affiliation with DFA. To that end I have created a National DFAlink site.

Howard Dean's inspiration and DFA's training and support is certainly responsible for my increased political involement in the last 5 years. There are many with similar stories.

Lets Celebrate!

DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION: Leno Signature Gatherers Pushed Out of Convention Center Hotel

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

I just overheard a conversation with Leno folks and Marriott staff. They're being kicked out of the hotel, where a fair share of delegates are lingering about. The Marriott is directly connected to the convention center, and a number of convention events are in the hotel, but the property is obviously private. Nevertheless, I've been observing the signature gathering process, and my gut call is that they will probably have the 300 signatures they need to bring the endorsement vote to the general assembly tomorrow. Leno volunteers are going bar to bar as far away as San Jose City Hall, and one Leno volunteer I talked to said he had already been in dozens of bars.
