Dean's New York Descendents Try to Make a Blue State Bluer

There’s no shortage of liberal candidates, but who do they oppose?

This article was published in the June 9, 2008, edition of The New York Observer.

Well-known liberal Howard Dean.

What to do if you’re running a group devoted to promoting progressive Democrat insurgents when most of the incumbents are progressive Democrats themselves?

That’s the dilemma faced for several years now by Democracy for New York City, the local affiliate of Democracy for America, a group that began as an offshoot of Howard Dean’s transformative 2004 presidential campaign.

Proud to do some work for Leno.

Big election eve for Mark Leno. Jim Dean of Democracy for America flew into town to help get out the vote (he's phone banking right now). Failed Conservative Values: All about Greed

[courtesy of Blog for America]

There is sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.
Mahatma Gandhi

I interviewed people around the Democracy for America booth at the California Democratic Party Convention in San Jose.  I asked people how have conservative values failed?  It surprised me how many responded that the conservative value of greed was the biggest failure.   Here are some of the comments.

Failed Conservative Values: Dan Healy on Greed & Force

The word conservative is even more abused than the word progressive, I think.  But I guess in its current incarnation of those phrases, I think the word conservative literally means “I’m out for me”, and the word progressive means “We are out for we” at his most basic analysis.  That’s how things seem to look right now.

Leno Gets Key Lefty Endorsements

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

Assemblymember Mark Leno has had a good week on the endorsement front, winning this week's battle for backing from the activist left, the sure-fire voters that may well decide this tight State Senate between him, incumbent Sen. Carole Migden, and former Assemblymember Joe Nation in the state's most liberal senate district.

DemocracyForAmerica.com, the nation's largest progressive political action organization, announced that it has endorsed Mark Leno's campaign for the California State Senate. "Mark Leno is a phenomenal candidate and a true champion of the grassroots. Democracy for America is proud to endorse his campaign," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA. "Mark Leno has a long record as an effective and dynamic progressive."

DFA doesn't have a whole lot of members in California, but it does have an aggressive national netroots network. That's likely to help Leno down the final stretch of the campaign with much-needed cash.

Progressive Values Stories: Peter Harvey on Community versus Intolerance

by WhatAre Progressive Values [courtesy of Blog for America]

Community cannot for long feed on itself; it can only flourish with the coming of others from beyond, their unknown and undiscovered brothers.
Howard Thurman

I interviewed Peter Harvey at a Oakland, California Democracy for America meeting.  Peter  passionately talked about the progressive value of community and shared an early memory of the community reaching out to him.  However, he thinks that conservatives have completely missed the mark of religious teachings by going off into intolerance
