Fifth Anniversary!

Like a few other former Dean For America Meetups, Democracy For The Greater Glens Falls Area got an early start, first coming together to support Governor Dean's candidacy in April, 2003.

Five years later, we're still together and working for liberal and progressive causes in northeastern New York State, having missed only two meetings in all that time due to venue problems.

A few members of Glens Falls DFA pose with our old Dean banner!

At our special anniversary meeting we hung up our Howard Dean For America banner for old time's sake. It was a glorious sight that really took all us old Deaniacs back, and we thought the whole DFA community would feel the same way, too.

As the Grateful Dead once sang, what a long strange trip it's been!   We've branched out into environmental, energy and other issues.  But we're going to keep on truckin', carrying on the principles of the Howard Dean campaign of working for progressive candidates and causes, fighting right wing extremism and building a new American community.

Democracy For Greater Glens Falls Reads Names Of The Lost

Wednesday, March 19th, was the fifth anniversary of the United States' invasion of Iraq and Democracy For The Greater Glens Falls Area held yet another vigil for peace and to bring our troops home in City Park in downtown Glens Falls, NY.

One thing was different this time: members read all of the names of the American dead aloud-- almost 4,000, starting with those from New York and Vermont, which were read first, by themselves. Other members held candles. The effect was sobering and very powerful and all present were clearly moved, some to tears. It took almost 45 minutes, even with the names of those lost in each year of the war being read simultaneously in a form of counter point.

We were particularly privileged to have Frank Grassia (at right), who taught Pfc. Nathan Brown Social Studies at South High. Frank read Nathan Brown's name along with those of the fallen from New York and Vermont.

Economic forecasters at the University of Pacific have found that the Californian economy is in a recession, in contrast to the findings of the UCLA Anderson forecast, reportsthe Sac Bee. In the terms of numbers, UoP forecasters stress that it’sjust a quibble, with the economy getting only slightly worse in thelast quarter.

Yesterday was the fifth anniversary of the invasion ofIraq. Bob Mulholland of the DNC is celebrating it at the CaliforniaProgress Report by noting that the Iraq War has lasted longer than WWII. (He means US involvement in WWII, but give it a little more time.) Herightly lambasts McCain for his claim that Iran and Al-Qaeda areintimately connected, but the suggestion that McCain’s starting tosuffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s is a low blow.

Ron Oden, former Mayor of Palm Springs, is just starting his introductory remarks.  It's a packed room here at the Palm Desert Library's Community Room.  I recognize many faces here, the Democrats have been waiting for this for a long time.

I'll do my best to transcribe below.
