The Pentagon's Sleight of Hand in Crafting War Propaganda

by Kate Drazner [courtesy of Blog for America]

As an Internet Organizer for Progressive Future, I've been busily spreading the otherwise buried reports of the atrocities and abuses committed by military contractors in Iraq. As outraged as they made me, I had to wonder why these stories failed to reach the mainstream American public. Now I know why.

Iraqi refugees returning to Iraq...A sign of success?

by Jabbar Fazeli, MD [courtesy of Blog for America]

The news of Iraqi refugees returning to Iraq from Syria is being reported as a sign of reduced violence and increased public confidence in the Iraqi security forces. There are reasons for optimism in Iraq but I am not sure that the return of the refugees is such a great sign of security success. If the mainstream media were to invest an hour or so researching this topic, they might come across the fact the Syrian government has introduced new visa rules for the Iraqis that make it impossible for them to stay in Syria. With no where to go and no ability to stay the Iraqis are simply choosing to leave before they get deported. The Syrians now require an entry visas for new comers. Those who need their stay permit renewed need to return to Iraq in order to obtain a visa to re-enter Syria. Like everything else in Iraq, the headlines don't tell the whole story, or even the real story. If we can take a breather from celebrating the refugees' return for a second maybe we can then see the dynamics in play here and start planning for the likely, and imminent, influx of refugees to Turkey, as it is the obvious path of least resistance for Iraqi refugees from this point on.

How We Can Get Out Of Iraq - Details

by Wendy Patterson [courtesy of Blog for America]

IF we are serious about getting out of Iraq, Bill Richardson is the man to
do it. Going to New Hampshire to help his campaign will help give him the
chance to accomplish what we want. With 47% of New Hampshire votes
undecided, and Richardson tying with Edwards there, the race is still wide
open.

Read this amazingly detailed account about how it IS possible to get out
now, as opposed to what all the other Dems candidates and the plan before
Congress are saying:

Central Valley Convention a Big Success
by Candi Easter, CDP Region Director, Region 8

The Democratic Central Committees of Fresno, Kern, Kings and Tulare County hosted the first Central Valley Democratic Convention this past Saturday to re-energize and network with fellow Democrats.

Attendees listened to panel discussions on the State of the Valley, State of the State, and State of the Nation.  Participants included retired military, various experts on popular issues, grassroots activists, elected politicians, CDC officers and party leaders.

More than 400 Central Valley Democrats attended and enjoyed the booths and entertainment and a "Wall of Honor" depicting the soldiers killed in action in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.

California Democratic Party Chairman Art Torres called for all to help stop the Electoral College “reform initiative" that the Giuliani campaign is moving toward the June ballot.  Many representatives from presidential candidates were available to gather volunteers for the February 2008 primary.

One of the highlights of the program was a presentation by the "Raging Grannies," a local singing group made up of “age-challenged” ladies who use satire and music to make their political point.

DFAM Holds Its Eighth Successful "Arlington Miami"

by Simon Rose [courtesy of Blog for America]

Carlos ArredondoOnce again, members of Democracy for America Miami-Dade, together with the Veterans for Peace Miami chapter, hosted an amazingly moving and successful "Arlington Miami" memorial to honor the sacrifice of United States troops who have fallen during the occupation of Iraq.

Over Veterans Day weekend, the two groups set up close to three thousand memorial markers in downtown Miami's beautiful Bayfront Park. The highly visible venue provided the opportunity for thousands of citizens of Miami and tourists to stop and see the human cost the occupation is taking.

George Bush has declared the occupation of Iraq to be "the central front of the war on terror" but immediately after 911 asked Americans to sacrifice by going shopping. It is the intent of DFAM to bring to focus that what occurs daily in Iraq has very real costs that we must confront and debate in an intelligent way. To simply go shopping would be a disservice to the troops in Iraq and to the principles on which our country was founded.

"War Is Not The Answer" Yard Signs Now Available!

by Karl Keene [courtesy of Blog for America]

I've got some exciting news for the Fargo-Moorhead area! Earlier today I received a shipment of "War Is Not The Answer" yard signs from FCNL (Friends Committee on National Legislation - the Quaker Peace Lobby). The signs are made of corrugated plastic and come with metal wire stakes.

FCNL is showing its opposition to President Bush's "surge" plan for Iraq by having it's own surge - a surge of "War Is Not The Answer" yard signs across the U.S.!

Hundreds of thousands of these signs have been distributed across the country, and now you can become an important part of this movement! FCNL is calling on us to get these signs out to as many people as possible.

If you would like a yard sign, just e-mail me at: keenekarl@hotmail.com (Put "Yard Sign Request" in the subject line of your e-mail). I'll e-mail you back about where you can pick up your sign.

FCNL requests a suggested donation of $5.00 per yard sign, but no one who wants a sign will be turned away.
