CA-04: McClintock gets savaged by Pete WIlson

by Brian Leubitz [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

Being called an unreliable and somewhat treacherous partisan might be cool in a general election, but it won't do Tom McClintock much good in the primary against former Rep. Doug Ose in the 4th District.  McClintock, a former Gov and Lt. Gov. candidate, does not have a fan in former Republican Governor Pete Wilson.

Wilson is holding a press conference today to talk about McClintock. The press notice about the conference says Wilson will share at least one opinion about the man:

"I could never count on McClintock. He was always the first to criticize, but the last to help his team."

Ouch! Either way, Charlie Brown keeps chugging along in the Democratic race.  He'll face whichever bruised victor emerges from the GOP primary. You can find Charlie on the Calitics ActBlue page.

The New York Times reports:

Top aides to Gov. Eliot Spitzer said Tuesday morning that they expect the governor to resign his office, although the timing of the resignation remains uncertain.

Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson and his staff have begun laying the groundwork for him to take over as governor and are reaching out to members of the Legislature, the aides said.

Iowa Wrap Up

by Ilya Sheyman [courtesy of Blog for America]

With the New Hampshire primary fast approaching, I wanted to wrap up our trip to Iowa last week. Out trip began with us spending a whirlwind day in Davenport which I blogged about earlier. Here's a photo of Jim leading a discussion at the Live from Iowa Link Up. Nearly 700 of you have now listened to the call via our brand new channel at blogtalk radio. Thanks for all your feedback and a special shoutout to San Diego Meetup #23 which participated in the call from their monthly meeting.

That night, Jim, Danny, Matt and I headed over to Des Moines to be in the center of things for the caucuses. And, we were not dissapointed. Our day began at 7:30 am as we headed out for a John Edwards rally at the Steelworkers Hall in the southeast part of town. After navigating through the many one way streets, we finally arrived just in time to hear Senator Edwards rally the volunteers on their busiest day yet.

Today's Fresh Meat

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, California's only down-ballot Republican, will spearhead the effort to defeat a ballot measure meant to alter term limits, the Sacramento Bee reports. It's a bit ironic that Poizner is probablyusing the term-limits issue to build name recognition for himself, inanticipation of 2010 gubernatorial bid. And, as Lt. Gov. John Garamendiand other have pointed out, shouldn't he be looking after victims ofthe Southern California wildfires, not playing 2010 politics?

Dan Walters of the Bee offers some additional analysis of Poizner's foray into the ballot measure battle. Poizner is doing a political "three-fer," as Walters put: he's raisinghis profile, ensuring Proposition 93 will be competitive and threatensto take away Republican support for the initiative. LIke we said, agreat a way for a moderate to gain some trust in a GOP primary.

Saying he needs to devote his full time and energy to the "baseless " charges filed against himself, Orange County Sheriff Mike Caronna announced hisdecision to take a paid leave from office today, the Los Angeles Timesreports. it's sort of like Congressman John Doolittle, who has taken a"paid leave" from the House but still shows up and votes now and then.
