Hannah-Beth Jackson on the Calitics Show

by Brian Leubitz [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

We weren't able to arrange everything for our Monday 3:30 time slot, but today, in addition to a wrap-up of the June 3 election, we'll have an interview with Hannah-Beth Jackson, Democratic Nominee for the 19th State Senate District. We recorded the interview this morning, and let's just say she'll make a great Senator. The show will air today (6/10) at 3:30. You can listen live at the homepage, check it out later, or download it at iTunes.

In other news from this race, the Ventura County Star did a report on Sunday about who is funding the Ventura County GOP. You'll find some unsurprising answers:

The nation's largest tobacco company has donated $50,000 to the Ventura County Republican Central Committee as the local party gears up to help GOP candidate Tony Strickland in what is expected to be a multimillion-dollar campaign this fall in the 19th Senate District.

Vote Democratic on Tuesday!

by Penny Denenberg [courtesy of Party Line]

Secretary of State Debra Bowen delivered this week’s Democratic radio address.  The text of her speech is as follows:

Hello, I’m Secretary of State Debra Bowen, California’s chief elections officer.

Tuesday is Election Day in California, our second of three statewide elections in 2008.  The polls open at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday and they close at 8:00 p.m.   I encourage everyone who is registered to get out and vote!

On Tuesday, we will pick the party nominees for Congress, state Senate, and state Assembly – and consider two ballot initiatives.  In some areas, the ballot will also include local contests for county supervisor, mayor, school board, and other offices.

The candidates we select will make crucial decisions that shape our lives.  They will determine the amount of money that goes to our neighborhood schools, to law enforcement – and even how we recycle and how often our trash is picked up.

It’s critical that Californians of every background have a say in these choices.

Here are a few things to consider before you go to the polls:

Memorial Day at the Crosses

by Penny Denenberg [courtesy of Party Line]

I just returned from a Memorial Day vigil at the Lafayette crosses. Built by members of the community over the past two years on a steep five-acre hillside that overlooks the freeway and BART station, the crosses exert a magnetic draw on Memorial Day. Today, the total number of crosses stood at 4,084.

About 100 people came together near dusk to honor thesoldiers represented by those crosses on the hill, soldiers who have given somuch for their country.

It's Time To Do Something About This Congress!

Torture Planning Inside The White House?

I'll admit I've cut and pasted some material from some of my previous posts for a new article here. Recent events in the news makes this post as relevant as ever though. I believe something as unbelievable as War Crimes being planned inside the White House to be too important to disappear from the news radar screen in a couple of days. This deserves a thorough investigation, and should stay on the news page until our Congress actually DOES SOMETHING about it.... There's no doubt that these torture planning admissions go right to the top of the Team Bush food chain, criminally implicating Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice..... The President has admitted planning the War Crimes himself!!! Just when you think the Bush administration couldn't possibly be any more lawless and corrupt than it already is, a new even worse scandal emerges proving "Yes" They Can!

Progressive Values Stories: Suzanne Kite on the Golden Rule

by WhatAre Progressive Values [courtesy of Blog for America]

“The golden rule is that there are no golden rules.”
      George Bernard Shaw

We continue with another story about the golden rule.  In this interview with Suzanne Kite, she says that  progressives value the Golden Rule, "Treat people like you’d like to be treated, and don’t gossip."  As she says, "The problem is in politics there’s always gossip". I'm finding there seems to be a lot of different  versions of the Golden Rule.

We have committed the Golden Rule to memory; let us now commit it to life.”     Edwin Markham
