DFA Columbia's 23rd District Candidate Forum a great success!

23rd Disrtrict Candidate Forum

The candidate Forum held at the Carpenter's Hall on May 21st was very well attended and another success for DfMO. These are two great Progressive Candidates and the decision will be difficult for Democrats living in the 23rd District. Cande Iveson and Stephen Webber had never previously faced each other in a debate/forum setting. Those present and the candidates themselves greatly appreciated the opportunity for a side by side comparison. Here is what Jason Rosenbaum of the Columbia Tribune had to say:

We held a similar Forum last Month for the 25th District and are planning one now for the 21st in Callaway County where Don Salcedo is facing David Moen.

We had a special visitor to the Forum in the person of William Urquhart, an Obama staffer who is conducting Vote For Change voter Registration in our area. Check out the Obama website event section if you would like to do some voter Registration which will help candidates up and down the ticket.

Important Work in North Carolina

[courtesy of Blog for America]

Last week DFA endorsed the campaigns of Roy Carter and Larry Kissel who are running for the US House in the North Carolina 5th and 8th districts, respectively. We also spent a few days last week in North Carolina doing some rallying and canvassing for Roy Carter.

There are a few things you should know about these campaigns:

First, Roy and Larry are great progressive candidates who are doing a great job incorporating progressive values and the concerns of the voters in their districts in the same message. Whether it’s getting out of Iraq, health care for everyone, or getting rid of No Child Left Behind, Roy and Larry get the big picture: challenges for voters in their districts and the entire country.

Second, Roy and Larry can win. This has never been a DFA prerequisite, but you should know that both campaigns have highly competent staffs, committed volunteers, and are actively engaging voters in both the rural and urban areas of their districts. This is no small accomplishment given that two Presidential candidates are now campaigning all over North Carolina and sweeping up activists, supporters, and volunteers everywhere.

Fifth Anniversary!

by Larry Dudley [courtesy of Blog for America]

Like a few other former Dean For America Meetups, Democracy For The Greater Glens Falls Area got an early start, first coming together to support Governor Dean's candidacy in April, 2003.

Five years later, we're still together and working for liberal and progressive causes in northeastern New York State, having missed only two meetings in all that time due to venue problems.

A few members of Glens Falls DFA pose with our old Dean banner!

At our special anniversary meeting we hung up our Howard Dean For America banner for old time's sake. It was a glorious sight that really took all us old Deaniacs back, and we thought the whole DFA community would feel the same way, too.

As the Grateful Dead once sang, what a long strange trip it's been!   We've branched out into environmental, energy and other issues.  But we're going to keep on truckin', carrying on the principles of the Howard Dean campaign of working for progressive candidates and causes, fighting right wing extremism and building a new American community.

The Truth About Barack Obama

by Monica Smith [courtesy of Blog for America]

Although the Democracy for America community voted to endorse progressive candidates for president and Senator Barack Obama was one of three who qualified, there's been no further endorsement and this email is not intended to be one.

The purpose of the email is to provide some factual information to people who may have been confused by gossip and a media script that often has little relevance to the election process.  Even if elections are mainly a voter-driven activity, it's important that the information distributed about the candidates be accurate.

Enjoy.  And, if you find it worth-while, pass it on.

Florida Primaries Creeping Up...

by David Reiter [courtesy of Blog for America]

The Florida Presidential Primaries are about a week away, and activists all over the state are campaigning for their candidates regardless of their ‘unofficial’ status. The 2008 election may be one of the most important elections in American history, as it will dictate whether or not we continue on the current path of self-destruction, or create a new path toward peace, economic prosperity, and environmental responsibility.

Some are excited about the Democratic candidates and their message of change, while others remain unimpressed with the lack of choices we are consistently given to choose from for President. Some are vehemently supportive of one candidate or another, while others reluctantly choose from another slate of lackluster candidates. Many people feel the candidates hardly represent the American people because they are too busy representing the corporate interests that fund their campaigns…so they choose the best of bad choices.

November DFALink-up Report & More

by Monica Smith [courtesy of Blog for America]

This month's meeting mirrored what's happening in households all over our state and region--putting away the memories of summer and getting ready for a winter that's going to require additional expense.

So, we passed out envelopes for sending in contributions to Democracy for America both to support the on-going functions in Burlington and to make it possible to support progressive candidates all around the country, as those of us who are already signed up to contribute were reminded by Charles Chamberlain the other day:

www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/Application

Although our group isn't ready to make an endorsement in the U.S. Senate race, we recognize that having a choice in the primary is important and passed out contibution forms for Dr. Jay Buckey, who visited with us last month. Members who had an opportunity to attend an event last week in Keene, when both Jeanne Shaheen and Jay Buckey spoke about their interest in replacing Senator Sununu in the Senate, were particularly impressed by Buckey's positions on some important issues.
