Global Warming: It's not just a fact. It's a choice.

by Crystal Strait [courtesy of Party Line]

Recently, when I was driving on the 405 (stuck in the usual 11am LA traffic), I heard a radio ad of parents and grandparents apologizing to future generations for not stopping global warming. As the ad says, "Global warming isn't just a fact. It's a choice."

At the end of the spot I expected to hear a shout out for the Sierra Club, NRDC, CLCV--one of California's great environmental organizations that have working to champion pro-environment laws and more importantly change the overall culture of thinking about climate change.

Imagine my surprise when instead I was told that the ad was produced by Flex Your Power--a quasi-government agency funded in large part by taxpayer (utility consumers) money. It feels just like yesterday that the debate was IF global warming existed, not what we need to do to stop it.

The ad is in a TV spot version as well.

In conjunction with the ad, people can pledge to leave a better "legacy" for their children.

Let's just say that yesterday while looking at my paycheck and paying my SMUD bill, I felt proud that I was a taxpayer.

Covering the End of the California Legislative Session Has Many Challenges and Yet is So Important

[courtesy of California Progress Report]

frankrusso-small.jpg By Frank D. Russo

Trying to cover the final days of this year's California legislature with around 700 bills in play, and now some smaller number, is like driving down a busy street with side traffic, pedestrians, and the distraction of a circus going on that threatens to distract one's attention from a clear picture of the road.

One can try to take in the big picture and write in short brush strokes about individual bills that have passed, noting a few that have not, and perhaps a larger picture emerges for the reader as these different snapshots are published on the internet. The sheer variety of legislation boggles the imagination and challenges even veteran reporters. Political and policy debates range from the environment, healthy foods for school children, health care, insurance, safety for workers on the job, criminal laws and sentencing, prisons, discrimination, campaign finance laws, to the initiative process--and the list goes on, including seemingly esoteric laws about the use of kangaroo products in shoes and other products.

Speeding Our Way to Nonsense on the 241

This is the latest part of my special report on the proposed extension of the 241 Toll Road to San Onofre State Beach (aka Trestles). If you'd like, you can find the other stories in the "Speeding Our Way to Trestles" series on here. As the debate heats up over Trestles and the 241, I'd like to go in depth and examine all the issues involved... And I'd love for you to come along for the ride as we explore what can be done to relieve traffic in South Orange County AND Save Trestles Beach. Enjoy! : )

There are just some things in life we can always count on. Death. Taxes. Another season of "Cops" on Fox. Thousands more poor souls being told that they have no talent on "American Idol" on Fox. Now for me, the one thing in life I can ALWAYS seem to count on these days is complete and utter garbage from Red County/OC Blog on the proposed 241 Extension to Trestles.

Call Congress to SAVE TRESTLES!

by atdleft [courtesy of Calitics: Soapblox California - Front Page]

Remember what I said yesterday about Susan Davis' amendment to the Defense Authorization bill that would require TCA to comply with state and federal laws in extending the 241 Toll Road? Well, the amendment will be coming up for a vote TODAY! Now we know that TCA's preferred route for the Foothill-South 241 Extension would rip through and destroy the last great stretch of coast in Southern California. We also know that the Foothill-South 241 Extension would do nothing to relieve traffic, and it would totally violate the law.

Basically, we know that this proposed toll road to Trestles is a total waste of our time and money... But do our representatives in Washington? We need to make sure that they know what we already know. Follow me after the flip to find out how you can convince House Armed Service Committee members to do what's best for ALL OF US in Southern California...
