California Democratic Party Chair Art Torres on the 40th Anniversary of the Death of Bobby Kennedy

Forty years ago this week, Senator Bobby Kennedy won the California primary.
His last words to the cheering crowd were, ‘on to Chicago and let’s win there,’ and then we lost him.
After the funeral service in New York City, Bobby’s body was transported by train to Washington D.C., where tens of thousands of Americans lined the tracks to pay their respects.
Bobby Kennedy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, close to his brother John. Only a single cross and a small stone mark his gravesite.
This week is a time to think of his public service, his commitment to America and for all that Bobby dreamed of – dreams for which we still strive.

Plans to take back Presidency and parts of red California

The 150 Democratic Party activists who gathered for the 56th Annual California Democratic Council convention this past weekend in Fresno certainly had sky-high hopes about their party’s chances in the November elections—but they had their fingers crossed behind their backs, as well.
The woeful George W. Bush Administration—certainly the worst in living memory with its foolhardy and unjust Iraq War, its increasingly obvious willingness to bail out the rich at the expense of the working poor, its legacy of disdain for individual rights—had convention-goers salivating about the chance to advance a truly progressive agenda this fall. Talk in the convention’s workshops centered on how to capture parts of California and the nation—those infamous Red Counties and Red States—that haven’t landed in the Democratic column in decades, if ever.

CDP Chair Torres to Senator McCain: People with Pre-Existing Conditions Deserve Better
[courtesy of The California Majority Report]
California Democratic Party chair Art Torres isn't impressed with John McCain's health care proposal. Here's the statement:
"One day after a new Field Poll showed that nearly six in ten California voters are 'very concerned' about not being able to afford health care, John McCain has presented a health care 'plan' that amounts to nothing more than a third Bush term.
The fact of the matter is McCain’s plan is all style and no substance. The McCain proposal lacks any specifics on how he plans to help more people get health insurance, or how he will bring down costs and improve quality.
And the plan wouldn’t do anything to help Senator McCain’s and my fellow cancer survivors and others with pre-existing conditions find health insurance.
Before John McCain publicly fantasizes again about winning California in November, he ought to listen to the millions of Californians who are very worried about their health care. Californians simply won’t accept four more years of the Bush approach to health care reform."
