California Democratic Party Needs Structure for Financial Transparency and Accountability

The California Party is at a crossroads. It can either turn the way of clean money and electoral reform, embracing transparency and accountability in its own finances, or it can continue along the way of past “politics as usual” financing of elections and running the party, where kingmakers are common and the grassroots lick envelopes.

In this last election cycle, we saw, and helped finance, the California Democratic Party raise and spend tens of millions of dollars, nearly $30M of which was spend mostly for television advertising in the LA basin supporting the failed candidacy of Phil Angelides for Governor, when countless voter development efforts were left gasping by the wayside.

The Marin-DFA Democratic Club has sponsored the Financial Transparency and Accountability Resolution calling for the creation of an independent Audit Committee within the California Democratic Party to help further align party policy with operations.

Electoral College Initiative is Running out of Time

by sdpolitico [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

The SacBee is reporting tonight that State Election officials are saying that backers of the California electoral college initiative are at risk of missing the June ballot. Election officials said it will be difficult to finish counting the signatures in time for the January 24th state deadline.[Link]

Despite a recommendation from Secretary of State Debra Bowen that the proponents submit the signatures to the counties three weeks ago, they have yet to submit the necessary signatures. Supporters of the initiative need 433,971 signatures to qualify for the ballot. They are aiming at collecting 700,000 signature to ensure that they have enough to qualify for the ballot.[Link]

Dirty Tricksters Caught on Video: CBS Evening News Edition

by Erik Love [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

Just before Thanksgiving, I posted my video showing the illegal tactics that the Republicans are willing to use in order to get signatures on their so-called "Electoral College Reform Initiative" - a ballot proposal that in reality is yet another election-stealing Republican dirty trick.  And now, my video has just been featured nationally on the CBS Evening News.

In just a matter of days, the 2008 presidential election may actually be decided. In California. By progressives like you.

Because of your grassroots and netroots activism, the GOP's California ballot initiative campaign to steal the White House -- what the New York Times called an "elaborate dirty trick" designed by a "shadowy group" to "do serious damage to our democracy" -- is under significant pressure.

California Republican Party: Bankrupt of Ideas, Bankrupt of Cash

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

Over the weekend, it was revealed that the California Republican Party is in the red by $1.7 million. So it's going to be pretty tough for Dick Ackerman, Mike Villines, & Co. to lecture Democrats about who to balance the state's books when they can't even seem to balance their own.

"I don't know how to sugarcoat this," Fleischman wrote an e-mail obtained by the Associated Press. The party "is going through a very fiscally challenging period."

Uh huh. I'm guessing it has something to do with its inept leadership. Or perhaps the likes of ideologues like its elected leadership that is running the party into the ground with it's ultra-right philosophy.

But in the interim, Democrats can smirk every time they hear the Republican legislative leadership talk about "uncontrolled spending," "living within our means," and "running government like a business."

I'm running!!

by Marian Harris [courtesy of Blog for America]

To all my friends...

I have been overwhelmed by the number of folks who have asked me to reconsider my decision not to run for the 19th HD. Such a display of support – and the support showed me during the 2006 race- has made me change my mind. So….

I’m running! Frankly, I'm delighted!! I so enjoyed my run last year and really feel I have something to contribute to our district and to the State of Ohio.

Shall Democracy for Riverside Endorse Bill Hedrick for Congress?

by Denise [courtesy of Blog for America]

Democracy for Riverside offered both Bill Hedrick and Louis Vandenberg, the two progressive candidates currently running for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 44th Congressional District, the opportunity to compete for our local endorsement and recommendation to Democracy for America for the coveted DFA-List. Mr. Hedrick accepted the offer and returned the questionnaire.

Polling on whether or not Democracy for Riverside should endorse Mr. Hedrick will kick off following discussion at our monthly meeting on November 12, and will run until midnight on Sunday, November 25. Following are the questions posed by DFR and Mr. Hedrick’s responses in his own words.
