A quick diary to announce the Obama Nomination Celebration in SF today. It's a free event at Ruby Skye near Union Square from 7-midnight. Check out the FaceBook Event Page. It's hosted by Nate Mezmer, Matt Haney & Eric Casher, along with a great list of co-hosts (myself included).
And, although the event is free, feel free to pitch in for the campaign to restore Democratic values to the White House. Yes we can!

Fairness, Math, and Primary Realities
by David Reiter [courtesy of Blog for America]
It is still possible for either Obama or Clinton to win the Democratic Primary. Here is what needs to happen for one or the other to win. The race is not over, and all voters need to make sure they continue the pattern of record turnouts and vote for their candidate.
First, the math:
Number of Delegates to win the nomination: 2,024 Remaining Delegates: 914
Current Delegates
Obama: 1,629; Needed to win: 395; % of remaing delegates needed to win: 43.2%
Clinton: 1,486; Needed to win: 538; % of remaining delegates needed to win: 58.8%

America Wins the First Round
by Jo*in*Vermont [courtesy of Blog for America]
Hip, hip hooray! In spite of the direst of predictions, Democrats came out of Iowa and New Hampshire with no one crowned the front runner, no ‘presumptive leader" chosen, long before so many of us get the chance to vote.
That's makes us winners, in my book. For months we thought Hillary would skate to the nomination, thanks to the corpmedia political frenzy. For a week we thought the same might happen with Obama. So here we are on January 10th and the race is still wide open - there's still time to hear more and learn more and make our decisions carefully.
That's not to say we didn't lose, too. We lost several good candidates whose voices were so important in learning as much as we have about all of the candidates. My respect and thanks to those who have (and will soon) drop out of the race.
And a Special Big Thanks to Howard Dean! (who is first here, by the way!) Thank you Governor - here's looking forward to many more states having record turnouts and meaningful conversations with our candidates.

World's Most Important Poll
by John Barta [courtesy of Blog for America]
We call this the World's Most Important Poll because it shows that one popular Democratic candidate also has many Democratic voters that find them to be their least favored candidate, thus raising questions about their ability to succeed in the general election if they get the nomination. It costs only a few dollars to create this poll and you'll end up registering lots of voters in the process. This has energized our voter contact activity!
The poll does many other things as well:

Feinstein Asked by Civil Rights Community to Oppose Southwick Confirmation to US Court of Appeals
[courtesy of California Progress Report]
By Doug Lakey
On Tuesday October 9th, a group of more than 30 Californians gathered outside of Senator Dianne Feinstein’s office in San Francisco. Why were they there? To ask Senator Feinstein to vote no on the nomination of Leslie Southwick to a lifetime position on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. Regrettably, the senator had voted with Republicans on the Judiciary Committee to send his nomination to the full Senate. Why were these Californians gathered to oppose a judge who will not rule directly on California cases? Because they are fed up with George W. Bush’s court-packing program and hoping that their senator, long known as a champion of civil rights and equality for gays and lesbians, will change her vote when the nomination comes to a vote on the Senate floor.

More on DiFi and Southwick
by Brian Leubitz [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]
Remember Leslie Southwick? Well, in case you forgot, he's the guy who wrote that children should be removed from gay parents. Oh, and W appointed to him to be a federal judge. Yup, that guy. If you recall, DiFi is basically the only reason his nomination got past the judiciary committee. She broke ranks with the other Dems and voted in support of the nominations with her conservative bretheren in the Republican party. Yay DiFi, thanks for tossing the LGBT community under the bus again. You really have a knack for it.
Well, once you recall all of that, the other important news is that the nomination is coming up for a floor vote very soon. And our old pal DiFi is going around telling other Senators that she's getting no negative comments about Leslie Southwick at ALL! Everybody loves Leslie! Except, that's not really the case. Her own staffers, and other senators, seem to be surprised given the news from the real world that she's getting lots of mail about this.
The good folks at FireDogLake, have some ideas on what to do. Namely, make sure that DiFi hears a loud and clear message that this vote stunk then, and it stinks now. Oh, and there will be a presser next Tuesday. I'll try to be there. Mailing info blatantly ripped off from FDL over the flip.
