In the California Field Poll released today, leading Republican candidate Rudy Giuliani has dropped 10 points to 25% of the likely primary voters, down from 35% in Field's August survey.

There has not been any statistically significant change in the last two months for the pack following him, with Mitt Romney, John McCain, and Fred Thompson in the 12 to 13% range. Undecided voters have ticked up in the Republican primary for President with 22% saying they haven't made up their minds compared with 20% in August and 15% in March. There also is a slight increase overall in the numbers of Republican voters in the state supporting the "second tier" candidates, although none are above 4%.

Giuliani appears to have a slight lead over Romney in the self identified "strongly conservative" Republicans who are expected to make up roughly half of those who will vote and has much of his lead from moderately conservative or liberal Republican voters who make up the other half--where he gets 26% to Romney's 7% and McCain's 15%.

While Top GOP Presidential Candidates Skip Minority Debate Tonight, California Republicans are Mum

[courtesy of The California Majority Report]

Tonight in Baltimore, the GOP’s "Tiny Tent" strategy will again be in full force, with the Republican Party’s top four presidential candidates conspicuously absent from a debate focusing on minority issues.

The AP reports: "The four leading Republican candidates -- former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, Arizona Sen. John McCain and Mitt Romney -- cited scheduling conflicts in saying they could not attend the debate at Morgan State University, a historically black college."

This latest ingenious Republican tactic, brilliantly designed to reach out to fewer and fewer potential voters, comes on the heels of the release of a Republican polling firm’s survey that found: "Americans aren’t just having a tough time seeing themselves pulling the lever for Republicans these days. Fewer are seeing themselves as Republicans, period."

One might think that Republicans in a state like California, the most ethnically diverse state in the nation, would be vociferously opposing national Republicans’ party-shrinking efforts -- but the California GOP hasn’t uttered a peep.

Then again, considering the state GOP’s own record (or lack thereof) with respect to growing its ranks, perhaps their silence isn’t much of a surprise after all.

Frederick of Hollywood Hires Arnold's Failed 2005 Team

by Julia Rosen [courtesy of Calitics - Front Page]

I am crazy busy between all of the projects I am working on, but this is too amusing to me not to write up.  Fred Thompson has now hired both Todd Harris and Karen Hanretty for his now official, not illegal presidential run.  Those two were key consultants on Arnold's disastrous 2005 special election.  It was his aides that convinced him that a bunch of power grab measures and attacking labor was a good idea.  Wrong.  Oh so wrong.

Arnold is doing much better since he dropped the DC Navigators crew.  Indeed his former re-elect staffers were snapped up by other campaigns, way before Frederick got Harris and Hanretty.  BTW, anything that Mike Murphy says about Thompson should be considered coming from the campaign.  Todd Harris is a principle at Murphy's firm DC Navigators.

Ex-Schwarzenegger Campaign Flack Joins Fledgling Thompson Campaign

Todd Harris, the Governor's spokesperson during the 2005 special election, has landed a gig as the communications director for Fred Thompson's gubernatorial run, according to an AP report.

Harris, who teamed with Rob Stutzman to defend Schwarzenegger's ill-fated initiative campaign in 2005, was part of DC Navigators, which was managed by Mike Murphy. Harris had a solid reputation in Sacramento (not to mention excellent taste in fine wines). He and I mixed it up a bit during the election a few times but were able to laugh about it.

Before setting up shop in Sacramento, Harris was deputy communications director to John McCain during the Arizona senator's 2000 presidential race. After that he was communications director to then-Gov. Jeb Bush for the 2002.

Bush and Iraq Remain Toxic in California

By Frank D. Russo

The Survey and Policy Research Institute of San Jose State University, a respected and nonpartisan pollster, has just released a poll showing Hillary Clinton with a substantial lead (37%) over John Edwards and Barack Obama who both have 15% of the vote for the Democratic nomination for President in the February 5, 2008 election. On the Republican side, Rudolph Giuliani leads with 25% of the vote, with Fred Thompson, the new (and still technically "exploring" candidate) at 16%, edging out John McCain at 14% and within the margin of error of the poll. Mitt Romney trails badly at 5%.

Even though it is still early (the primary, even with it being advanced, is still 8 months away) and we haven't had a single vote in the states still ahead of us, the numbers tell an interesting story. Remembering that at this time in 2003, Kerry who decisively won the Democratic nomination for President, was languishing and all but given up for dead, here's what the numbers mean.
