Will the California Nurses Association's Leadership Back Nadar Again in 2008 -- Or a Democrat?

As Democrats head into what is expected to be another bruising battle for the White House, I got to wondering: will the leadership of the California Nurses Association endorse the Democratic nominee in 2008? Or will its radical leadership once again throw its weight behind Ralph Nader as it did in 2000, helping tip the election to George W. Bush?

By all accounts, CNA's leadership is as out of touch with political reality now as it was in 2000. It has broken from organized labor by opposing the Democratic health care plan advanced in Sacramento, and it has poured hundreds of thousands of dollars in negative advertising and mail against Democrats who supported that progressive plan.

So does its opposition to the health care plan by California's Democratic leaders -- which mirrors that of the frontrunners for the Democratic presidential nomination -- mean CNA's leaders are ready to help throw the presidential election to the Republicans again? If Ralph Nader ends up on the ballot, as he's signaled, don't be surprised. Nader and CNA's leadership have a decade-long love affair.
